New Trump McConnell Friendship – Why?

What Caused the New Trump McConnell Friendship?

A new Trump McConnell friendship was highlighted in the Rose Garden on Monday. It was a surprise very few expected. President Trump spoke clearly about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell:

“… we’ve been friends for a long time … we’re probably now … closer than ever before … And the relationship is very good “

That’s right, Trump was speaking about Mitch McConnell and their renewed friendship.

Trump went on to say:

“We’re fighting for the same thing. We’re fighting for lower taxes, big tax cuts, the biggest tax cuts in the history of our nation. We’re fighting for tax reform, as part of that. We are getting close to healthcare.”

This is the same President Trump that was berating Mitch McConnell in a tweet this summer saying:

“The only problem I have with Mitch McConnell is that, after hearing Repeal & Replace for 7 years, he failed! That should NEVER have happened!”

and

“Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn’t get it done.”

Up until recently, the Trump McConnell relationship seemed very strained and tenuous at best.

Those disappointed with the progress of McConnell to enact the Trump agenda, called Mitch McConnell a failure, a dummy, weak, spineless, and called for his removal as the Senate Majority Leader. Against that backdrop, the new Trump McConnell friendship was a surprise.

Even the quick pace of McConnell’s words in the Rose Garden were in sharp contrast to his normal, slow, measured pace.

McConnell was Pressured by President Trump to Swing into Action

One reason for the Trump McConnell friendship was President Trump. Clearly, Trump made a big impact on McConnell and energized McConnell. Trump’s tweets and jawboning got to McConnell.

Literally, the swamp is getting a case of vertigo from the swift pace of Trump’s recent actions to overturn the dismal legacy of Obama. The actions on subsidies for health insurance companies and the right for small businesses to create cost-cutting associations to bring down healthcare premiums were part of it.  Trump’s action on the disastrous Iran nuclear deal to not certify Iranian compliance and to push the ball back into Congress for a sanction decision within 60 days added further to the momentum and pressure on McConnell.

The list goes on: DACA and immigration reform, the Bergdahl decision to plead guilty to desertion, new welfare reform, etc.

McConnell is getting the message that Trump is an active president. Trump is dismantling the Obama legacy. Plus, Trump is going to keep pushing Congress for action.

McConnell was Pressured by the Republican Establishment Donors

They simply will not tolerate a complete lack of action on the part of Congress. They wildly fear a loss of the House and Senate to the Democrats in 2018. That’s a nightmare to Republican Establishment donors. In addition, some donors might be threatening the Republican Establishment in Congress to expect donations to dry up if dramatic House and Senate loses are in the offing.

McConnell was Pressured by Conservatives

Steve Bannon and others have been pushing McConnell to enact the Trump agenda, to follow their conservative election promises, and to adhere to the conservative will of the voters in the 2016 election mandate.

With the exception of strong conservative Ted Cruz, all the other Republican senators might face stiff opposition from conservative primary fights. Sen. Luther Strange lost to a more conservative challenger in the Republican primary in Alabama to former judge Roy Moore. Similarly, Dr. Kelli Ward in Arizona will likely defeat incumbent Sen. Jeff Flake.

McConnell does not want to have other Republican Establishment losses in the primaries in 2018.

Summary

Taken together, the pressure from President Trump, the Republican Establishment donors, and conservatives have all impacted Mitch McConnell. Expect some action soon on the Trump agenda.

The Washington DC Establishment thought Trump was inexperienced and would be a pushover for their political hardball. Now they are learning, Trump is a shrewd negotiator whose tactics mimic President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
