Are Gun Violence Statistics Overstated?

The Tragic Parkland Florida School Massacre and Gun Violence Statistics

After the gun violence and tragic massacre of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Left has been pushing hard to further regulate or eliminate guns and to diminish the influence of the NRA. Actually, that’s a predictable response from the Left that includes the old mainstream media and the Democrats.

While acknowledging the tragedy in Florida, let’s look at some gun violence statistics to put this terrible incident into some perspective.

Gun Violence and Related Statistics

After the Parkland shooting, one group indicated that there had been 18 school shootings so far in 2018. Was this misleading? Included in the statistic were suicides, accidental firearm discharges, and shootings in the general vicinity of schools. In about 50% of the “school shootings,” no one was even hurt. Certainly, there were not 18 Parkland Florida massacres.

Mass shootings in the U. S. are not increasing or decreasing much if you look at the statistics from 1976 to 2012. There are about 20 mass shootings per year with the data including four or more people shot at one time. The incidents include some family violence cases.

Department of Education numbers show that school shootings are relatively rare and a Bureau of Justice Statistics indicates that since 1993 crimes in schools are decreasing.

According to one report, firearm homicides and the rate of firearm homicides per 100,000 persons, both declined since 1993. More recently, the U. S. firearm homicide rate is less than 4 per 100,000 people.

Sometimes car deaths and gun violence are compared.  Investor’s Business Daily reported that: “In 2013, 99.4% of car deaths were accidental in nature. In sharp contrast, only 1.8% of gun deaths were accidental. A staggering 65% of gun fatalities are suicides.”

Compare gun violence in schools to school-age children that die every year riding their bikes or walking to school. About 100 school-age children die in those accidents every year.

Why All the News Coverage of the Parkland Florida Tragedy?

Unfortunately, it serves the Left’s socialist and utopian agenda to whittle away at the Second Amendment and eventually eliminate the Second Amendment entirely.

What’s the Real Answer to Avoid Potential Future School Shootings?

Policy #1 – Beef up the FBI and local enforcement priorities to take all such “tips” and “threats” reported by the public very seriously.

Policy #2 – Protect our schools, colleges and universities with screening portals at building entrances to discover weapons. Plus, also provide professional armed guards (marked and unmarked) scattered throughout campus buildings.
